Be the Sage, Not the Storm

A Daily Joysprout
When challenges arise, take a breath and ask, “What would wisdom do here?” Then follow the quiet answer that surfaces.

Turning Everyday Moments into Spiritual Practice

“If it is not right, do not do it; if it is not true, do not say it.” -Marcus Aurelius

Today, when you find yourself at a crossroads whether in conversation, decision, or emotion pause and ask, “How would a wise person handle this moment?” This simple question serves as a compass, guiding you toward clarity. The answer will arise from within. Your inner sage already lives there, the part of you that values truth over approval, patience over haste, and understanding over reaction. It will rise to the occasion if you make space to listen.

Whether or not you follow that inner knowing is always a choice. Yet each time you do, you strengthen it, just as a muscle grows through consistent use. And, as with any muscle, when it is neglected, it weakens. The more you practice listening to and acting from this deeper wisdom, the more naturally it will guide your life.

As you move through the day, let your inner wisdom lead. When frustration, confusion, or temptation appears, imagine the calm, steady presence of your wisest self standing beside or within you. Notice how that presence changes your tone, your breath, and your decisions.

Find all the ways that help you connect with this inner sage and commit to nurturing them. Use your inner smile. Spend time with people who live their own personal legend, those who act with integrity and depth. Seek out environments that naturally bring forth your higher self: take a mindful walk in nature, have a meaningful conversation, or engage in Joywork that challenges and renews you.

At the end of the day, reflect in your journal. Note the choices you made, the insights you gained, and the moments you felt most aligned. Ask yourself: What did wisdom sound like today? A whisper? A pause? Or a deep knowing?

The more you listen, the louder it becomes. Wisdom grows in the space between impulse and action and in choosing to hear it, you begin to embody it.
